The 1st Guards Tank Brigade role in Operation Mars, a small offensive designed to cut off a German salient near Moscow, was to attack north to link up with 39th Army attacking the bulge from the north. As the operation began, the 1st Guards Tank Brigade was leading the assault toward where elements of the Grossdeutschland Division had been sighted.
